I just finished my first braid.
The basic 8 strand braid is easy. A marudai would definitely result in faster braiding but the disk is very rhythmic. Once I settled in with it, I was surprised to find, I didn't mind inserting the cord into the slots.
I used 20lb (1mm) hemp in purple and natural. I started with 8 strands (4 of each color) 6 feet long. Standard 8 strand braid with each color on opposite axis. So purple on north and south and natural on east and west. The finished length is about 39 inches from knot to knot, with some tails left over. Average diameter 4mm.
My tension is uneven through the first 1/3 or so but I think I have that solved. I will have to see what happens next time as to whether it was just because of no weight on the short braid or my newness. I did notice and correct it as I went, which seemed to solve most of the issue. I can always weight the braid, if necessary.
The disk came with instructions but I bought the book A Complete Guide to Kumihimo on a Braiding Loom by Kathy King James to use as a starting reference. The book is small but seems to be a good general instruction book. It is very easy to understand, good size font making it easy to read, nice diagrams and decent photos (photos could use some improvement). I have my eye on a few other books but chose this one due to the variety in it. Since I ordered online I had to choose by description rather than actually viewing. This book covers round, flat, square, hollow, and beaded braids. By the time I have tried them all, along with different fibers, I'll know if I want to continue.
